Mary and John’s stylish London wedding took place on a beautiful balmy summers day in June this year, at the elegant Chelsea Old Town Hall. With tons of beautiful blooms and creative styling their day was influenced by Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ – the perfect inspiration for a literature loving, stylish couple.

We’re delighted to share the images with you today by Jez Dickinson Photography along with some details about Mary’s Jesus Peiro wedding dress and their stylish London wedding day.

THE DRESS

Mary wore Jesus Peiro 6032, a unique, contemporary dress made from luxurious finely striped organza with fitted hips and a full pleated skirt, finish with a bold structural bow to the waist.

Mary tells us why she loved her gown so much, and her experience shopping with us at Miss Bush;

“I loved this dress for the unusual silhouette. Although it had no corseting, I felt it made the best of my figure, nipping in at the waist and skimming over my hips, but then flaring out with big box pleats giving a flattering contrast to the sculpted shape above. Feeling relatively nervous about the inevitable scrutiny on a bride, I felt so comfortable and ‘safe’ in this dress, I didn’t worry about a bad angle or a roll of fat. The fabric was beautiful matt silk organza with a whisper of a cross hatch pattern running through it. The big, off centre bow at the waist made it feel contemporary but also gave a nod to a classic 1960s style feature. Overall, I felt incredibly elegant and classic in my pure white dress, but the design also made me feel fresh, pretty and young. I have since recommended JP to a friend who is also wearing one of their designs for her wedding in September!”

“I landed on Jesus Peiro on my first visit accompanied by my friend Rachel. Two visits followed, one with my Mother and Father and then finally with my two sisters for the ultimate seal of approval/comparison with a few other choices. Emma and her team were so helpful in discussing altered necklines, petticoat options, different belts had I wanted it, shrugs or jackets etc. They definitely give an honest opinion.

I absolutely loved trying on the different dresses. Although I didn’t end up with a dress that had a corset, it was amazingly good fun to try those on and in the process, work out what I wanted to look like. It was an enormous privilege to have the undivided attention of the stylists as well as friends and family, all focussed on me and willing me to feel happy and beautiful in what I chose.”

ACCESSORIES

Mary accessorised her daytime look with diamond and pearl earrings and a crystal and pearl hair slide borrowed from a friend, along with plain matt gold and ivory shoes from LK Bennett. For the evening look, she transformed her gown with a unique custom addition to her dress;

“In the evening, Miss Bush fashioned for me no less than five buttons to hold my skirt up at around my hips. This created amazing swags of fabric for an architectural silhouette, giving the dress an unexpected new look. I also removed the petticoat in the evening and wore higher, midnight blue satin Jenny Packham shoes. Together with my headdress and some emerald green agate drop earrings I felt that I had a ‘refresh’ whilst still getting to wear the same beautiful dress.”

ABOUT THE DAY

Mary tells us more about the inspiration behind their stylish London wedding, with a literary twist;

“We wanted to get married in June and 24 June was the Saturday that remained free at our Church, round the corner from the hospital where John works. It just so happens that 24 June is the Feast Day of St John the Baptist, otherwise known as Midsummer. The weather on the day left us in now doubt that it was Midsummer but the theme such as it was really kicked in for the evening. After the traditional church wedding and high tea we had a few hours’ break when our guests changed into black tie and Chelsea Old Town Hall was transformed into an enchanted woodland. John and I love art and literature and so we had a perfect excuse to theme the evening “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”, reflected in midnight blue tablecloths, tables names taken from scenes in the Shakespearean play, and masks and hats and floral gardens for our ‘players’.”

“John changed into his black tie with a new floral dinner jacket from Favourbrook. In turn, I swapped my veil and pearl slide for a bespoke headdress by milliner Lizzie McQuade, made to match the liberty print fabric of John’s DJ. We have friends who are actors and they started proceedings for the evening with a Shakespearean sonnet recita-off.

We wanted the evening to feel like a really fun dinner party and after the formality and tradition of the day’s proceedings, we loved the change of tempo and look . Linn at the Flower Yard understood entirely, swapping fat pink and white hydrangeas from the day for wild blue and purple flower arrangements, interspersed with dramatic branches of greenery from which we hung multi-coloured twinkling lanterns. We chose to serve our guests a family favourite and feature at many of our parties over the years – Maids of Honour chicken pies with summery middle eastern style salads. The food was simple and easy, leaving plenty of time for the dancing.”

“The marriage service and the vows I made where the heart of the day. Being walked down the aisle by my father to Laudate Dominum sung by a friend, followed by my sisters and eight nieces and nephews, seeing all my friends and family beaming at me and of course my husband turning to greet me – all unrepeatable and magical. Other scenes that will stay vivid in my memory is the Choir of St Luke’s singing and readings in the church; walking down Sydney Street to Chelsea Old Town Hall behind our jazz band; giving my speech and hearing others’ words; the first dance and then walking along Kings Road at midnight, hailing a black cab to take us back to our hotel utterly exhausted and happy.”

FINAL WORDS

Some dress shopping and wedding planning advice from our bride, Mary;

“Choose a dress that you feel amazing in on the day you try it – don’t choose something that you feel you need to slim into for example. Ultimately, you will be wearing that dress all day and as much as you think you will end up holding yourself ‘just so’ to pose for pictures, you end up completely distracted by how happy and wonderful everything is, so it really is true that you need to feel completely comfortable.

Also, make sure you talk about how to pin your dress up securely for the evening – it makes a huge difference for dancing!

Wedding planning – there is always something more you can do and some extra detail you haven’t thought of, but on the day, everyone is wishing you well and no one will judge you or remember the day for anything other than how happy you and your groom are. Don’t let the planning get in the way of the amazingly special time of being engaged.”
